Blog 8B: Written Reflection on the Hero/Villain assignment

Pete Fumosa’s character assignment involved Larry the Lawyer and Mr. Doctor. They used lighting so show the character motivation. Larry the lawyer is more shaded; one side of his face is much darker than the other. His colors, black and red, are symbols of a darkness and blood. The mood comes with his shape; his shape is very overpowering and dominating. Mr. Doctor, the judge, and the nemesis of Larry the Lawyer has almost no shading at all, giving him a lighter feel. His color scheme of yellow and blue have happy and uplifting symbolism that comes with the blue sky and yellow sun. His rounder shape and goofy face give him the connotation that he is definitely the good guy. The use of contrast and affinity is used between the two characters. The affinity lies within the characters themselves. Larry the Lawyer, has red, black, orange and yellow are analogous to one another. Mr. Doctor’s colors of yellow and blue are complementary to one another. Between the two characters they contrast. The mood given with Larry the Lawyer because of his coloring and shading is much darker than that of Mr. Doctors lighter, yellow and blue coloring.

Andrew Nalette’s characters are very creative and interesting. Him and his partner chose to have their hero and villain be represented by the sun and the moon. I really liked that their epic battle happened during an eclipse when they finally stop “chasing” one another. I thought the idea in general was very creative. Due to the nature of the characters, lighting was obviously their main difference. Shadows/darkness was used with the moon, where as the sun was very bright and yellow. Because the moon comes out at night, essentially always associated with night, the moon is the antagonist in this story. The sun being associated with the daytime and good times and good weather, he is the antagonist of the animation. Also the symbolism that comes with the sun and the moon also contribute to their roles in the animation. The sun has a happy, fun and warm connotation; therefore he is the protagonist of the animation. The moon symbolizes night, darkness and, spooky things, therefore he is the villain. The mood that is set during their animation is mostly by the connotations previously states but also with their facial expressions. The sun has sunglasses and a smile, where the moon has a deep brow and a frown. There is nothing more contrast-y than night and day so these  characters are very contrasting, where their shapes are affinitive

Blog 10: Written response to reading: FREAK FACTOR

David Rendalls “ FREAK FACTOR : Discovering Uniqueness by Flaunting Weakness
http://changethis.com/manifesto/45.02.FreakFactor/pdf/45.02.FreakFactor.pdf

is a great read and really helps you feel better about yourself. My favorite three topics that he covers are:

3. Flawless: there’s Nothing Wrong With You
4. Forget It: Don’t try to fix Your Weaknesses
7. Fit: Find the right spot

Flawless: There’s nothing wrong with you introduces the idea to the audience that we truly have no weaknesses that our weaknesses are merely out strengths in reverse. With each weakness, an opposing strength usually comes with it. For example, if your disorganized your probably very creative and if flexible, your probably inconsistent. These ideas help you look at all of your faults in a completely different light that lead to your strengths. He tackles three common “flaws” that people think they have, Disorganization, Dyslexia and Addiction. He tells that disorganization, something usually frowned upon is usually a good indicator of creativity. “Albert Einstein, probably one of the most creative minds of the 20th century, was also a proud member of the messy desk club saying, ‘If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, then what is an empty desk a sign of?’” He also tells us that 1/3 of the entrepreneurs in America are dyslexic and tells a story of how a man overcame his addiction to drugs with an addiction to Ironman Triathlons, he did try to diminish his addiction, he merely re-routed it. I found this significant to me because, being an awkward, tall, redhead, I'm not like most people. And to think that there is nothing wrong with me just new strengths is really cool and uplifting. Creatively I can accept that I am not very good with technology , however I am really good at working with people and being both a leader and a follower.

Forget It: Don’t try to fix Your Weaknesses I found almost inspiring and made just SO much sense!! The points that he makes in this section are basically, trying to fix our weaknesses suck, is no fun and usually doesn’t work. The next section is about how it is the complete opposite with evolving our strengths. I think that the way that he and many of the authors on this site think is fantastical that if you don’t want to do something and if you don’t enjoy it… don’t do it. Simple as that, and that we have been trained through years of public schooling that some things in life you just have to do, because your making us do it. If school nurtured children’s initial instincts, think of the creative minds that we would have today! Accepting that we are not perfect and that trying to be is impossible is the key to realizing that we should work on being the best version of ourselves. I think self realization is one of the hardest things to do, which ironic cause you are you, and it would make sense that you know yourself, right? But people have a really hard time figuring out that they are human and have limitations, and that others are human and too have limitations. Trying to fix these problems is hard / impossible and really just kind of depressing. Creatively, I can stop worrying about things I am no good at and start concentrating on the things I am naturally good at.

Fit: Find the right spot. This point emphasizes that sometimes your weakness is your strength in disguise. For example, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’s nose was his weakness that everyone teased him for, but in the right spot of the foggy Christmas Eve, his weakness became his claim to fame and his strength! So we have to put ourselves in or create situations where our strengths shine in order to enjoy our lives to the fullest.  We just need to find a situation where we can be our fullest potential. He also advises us to find people that complement our weaknesses as well in order to create a full being to get everything done (like within a business). I think that finding the right spot is a great idea. Growing up I tried all sorts of sports and had a miserable time with them and was really down on my self-esteem. When I joined band and the flag team, and found my right spot my self-esteem sky rocketed and I had a great time in high school. So, even if its dorky, band was the right spot for me and I'm really glad I found it. Creatively, I can apply this so that I am not doing things I dislike or am not good at and can find a different place where my skills are needed.

Blog 9A: Reflections on the Gaming presentation

I liked our video game concept and the characters that we came up with, however I’m not sure that the idea of our decision tree came across as strongly as I would have like it too.  We did not emphasize in the PowerPoint and in our presentation what we thought was one of the coolest parts that we thought of. Basically, we wanted it so when you had a certain amount of characters you could split off into different groups so that when you play the game a second , third or fourth time you can fight different bosses, try different paths to getting to the same area. And I think we should have emphasized this characteristic g the game more.  I think we did a very good job describing the characters and what they represented and the musical leitmotifs that would accompany each character. We had four examples of the good guys and the evil being that the game‘s objective is to defeat. We also described what kind of music you would hear with each character and what kind of music you would hear when you were approaching a battle of some sort. I think our presentation would have been stronger with the music elements being real music instead of an explanation of music and an example of the world htat the characters lived in would have been cool to have as well.
I think that discussing the objectives with others are the easiest things to do because the objectives are the moments that really move the game forward and give it a point. Most objectives are not obscure as some players goals might be. To talk about mechanics, that seems more a common sense thing that something to discuss, for there are common practices that all games use on each console that do certain things. Rules are somewhat tricky to because everyone has different ideas on the limitations that a game may have and that has the possibility to become a point of controversy. This is why I think Objectives are the easiest because they are the driving point of the video game that makes the whole thing make sense and virtually, all the other aspects are somewhat dependent on the objective.

Blog 7: Written Reflection on the Video Joke Assignment

Joke #1

Joke #2

In our first video joke we used the idea of sex but also farting to appeal to the college student audience. Using the idea of awaiting sex we created a tension, especially with the farts while the girl is out of the room, builds the tension and stress of her return on two different levels. The release is when she finally takes off his blindfold to reveal the surprise of a camera crew in her room. We used rhythm with the farting in the first joke where we show different moments in his room with him farting and really emphasizes that his farting is going on for a long period of time but also that it makes you pay attention to the consistent in the frame, which is his farting and associates the fart movement that he makes with farting so they wont be confused.
The second joke we use lines a lot. His shirt is affinitive with the linear floors; table, walls and doors at home all have straight lines that direct your attention to him. However this is contrasting to when he is ordering beans on a round table, in a round bowl with round beans. We also use the idea of all the straight lines at him home to direct your attention to the round cake on the round plate that will foreshadow a celebration, usually involving more people. Basically, straight lines are good things but curvilinear objects are dangerous. In this the lines are also used when he is walking home, he creates a diagonal lines within each shot of him walking home on the screen for that scene. This makes it so the audience can concentrate on the jokes going on within his headphones and less on the surroundings because he takes the same path in every segment.

5A : Reimagining Visual Framing

Original by Ben Goossen:

 My cropped version:

Ben Goossen’s photo of a photo of a blue sky on a clothesline on a stormy day really hit something with me. I enjoy clouds a lot and I especially like watching a storm come in and how the clouds change. So, beyond all of the other photos I chose this one. I saw how he contrasted the two by color but the subject (clouds) was affinitive. I understand my appeal now as the contrast between the two images and how they are combined.

The use of the clothesline and the clothespin extenuates the Rule of thirds.  With the top horizontal line being the clothesline and the intersection between that and the far right vertical line being extenuated with the clothespin. In addition the two remaining edges of the picture fall near the two other intersection. Also, within the background picture and foreground picture beyond the contrast of color there is also one of shot type. The darker background shot is a wide shot and the close up shot of the clouds in the foreground helps the viewer realize the depth and wide-ness of the background image.

I cropped the picture the way I did to show what the picture would look like without the light blue picture in the foreground and how it takes away any sort of visual intensity. It takes away form the whole background image that seems to be moving toward the viewer. It also doe not have anything that the line is drawing the eye to, its just a line, there is no subject.  I think the artist framed it the way that he did for somewhat obvious reasons, unlike mine it has a subject and it shows contrast and the clothesline directs your eye to the picture unlike my cropped version in which it leads your eye off of the drawing. I also think that by adding the light blue cloudy picture acts as a sort of release from the tension that is brought by the dark looming clouds in the background. That was not in my cropped photo leaving the viewer uncomfortable and unsatisfied with the picture. I also kept the line in the middle abiding by no rule of thirds. This was mostly so that I would not include any of the light blue photo but I found that it made the picture look amateur and less put together which emphasized to me how much rule of thirds must have been driven into my subconscious but I never knew. It just became something I was accustomed too.

Response other students to Soundscape and Song

Blog 4A: Response to Brainwashed

Seth Godin’s “Brainwashed”

http://changethis.com/manifesto/66.01.Brainwashed/pdf/66.01.Brainwashed.pdf
One layer that is suggested to the reader that we need to do, in order to become un-brainwashed is "Acknowledge the Lizard." By this he means that we NEED acknowledge that part of us that starts screaming inside saying THIS IS SCARY THIS IS RISKY MAYBE WE SHOULDN'T DO THIS and become apparent that this is there. By becoming aware of this aspect of our brainwashing that comes with our schooling telling us not to be risky, we can over come it. Once it becomes an isolated factor that we are apparent of it loses all of its power. Once this part of you is pin pointed, you can over come it. You can tell it to shut up and then there's nothing that can scare you. You can be confident in your art and your efforts without the fear of what others will think.

Another great layer that Seth points out is that we need to adapt the ability to connect. To makes something of this incredible resource thrown at us called the internet and use to to open and explore an infinite amount of things and to use this knowledge and our opinions and connect to other people about them. In a not so technological stand point, i read an article the other day that called its readers to connect in a different manner. He called them to "know the cleaning lady" and he meant this is the most literal way. At work or school there is the janior we see everyday and he or she helps make our lives cleaner and easier, why should we not know their names? He calls us to connect with everyone, especially those that help you, it does wonders for them and helps you be an infinitely better person.

I love all articles like this. I think they give great insight into something that everyone wants to be but not many people are. good. Everyone wants to be a good person and i think articles like this challenge us to think different but also on another level challenge us to to be a better person. To be accepting and kind and open to new things. I think that being a good person is especially more important in the media world where connectivity and networking are some of the core values we are told to work on.

Music / Song project

Blog 3A: Demo and Written exploration of Cover songs

Original
Cover

I chose to compare Toxic by Britney Spears with the Toxic cover by The Cast of Glee.
While the lyrics and melody are the same in both of the songs, the speed and organization are different.
In the original by Britney Spears the song is much faster than that of the glee remix. The original Britney Spears song is much more up-tempo… although both give a sexual feel but they do it in very different ways. In the original Britney is sexual within the song with a fast exciting never ending pace and seductive lyrics, while in the glee version they use the same lyrics but they use a silently, more secretive type of seductive, less noticeable.  The glee version is more seductive than the original, Britney version, which is overtly sexy. In the Glee remix they are going for a calmer, more musical approach.  I think this also changes the timbre of the song giving changing from a high energy, intense song to a more sly and
The organization in the original is also far more chaotic and frenzied where the Glee version is more controlled and precise (especially in the beginning). The organization is very intro/chorus/verse…etc it is easy to hear the difference because of the change in instrumentation. The addition of a “band” and more driving drums denotes the chorus where they're more accapella with minimal guitar are the verses.
I think that the Glee version uses are more effective tension and release when they choose to change from only with a guitar to additional instrumentation. There is a certain creepy tension that builds with the solely guitar version that is released when the tempo increases. Also there is a great deal of height difference in the Glee version compared to the original.
Since both have the same lyrics they have the same text and subtext. The underlying meaning of the chorus

With a taste of your lips
I’m on a ride
You're toxic
I'm slipping under With a taste of a poison paradiseI’m addicted to youDon’t you know that you’re toxicAnd I love what you doDon’t you know that you’re toxic”

Implying that everything about him in intoxicating and she has no defenses against him, that she can not help herself. The subtext is extremely sexual and contains numerous innuendos, while the text is more evasive to the face.

It is hard for me to choose which version I like better because they're so different. The original version is definitely more pop-est and upbeat. The cover of the song is calmer and has more emotional feeling during it by using a lack of instrumentation. I like the original version for its originality and upbeat-ness and fun while I have more musical respect fort he accapella version and find it musically much more sophisticated. Musically, I like the Glee cover better, as I do with most of their covers but  overall for sentimental reasons I will choose the original because I LOVED Britney Spears as a kid and I loved this song!

Blog Entry 1B: Ways to Get Ideas

http://changethis.com/manifesto/show/49.06.14Ways

Mitch Ditkoff gives his readers 14 ways to get breakthrough ideas. They are very insightful thoughts that really make you question the way that you go about solving a problem or thinking of an idea. After reading this, "getting a breakthrough idea" doesn't seem like such a hard task. Realistically, if you are involved and interested in something, you will know enough information about that certain subject that it would not be hard at all to just let your thoughts flow into a great idea!! But also easier said than done, but I believe these 14 steps will significantly help people with ideas floating around in their heads to make them reality! My favorite three steps are...
1. Follow Your Fascination
6. Define the Right Challenge
8. Take a Break

Fallowing your Fascination. I like that he uses the word fascination rather than interest. I think that intrest has the connotation of something that you know all about, your friends and family know it is an interest of yours and it seems concrete. Fascination is that little thing that, when you see it, it makes you think and it does something to your mind that really sparks it. Fascination has the potential to be so new and exciting and lead to a real passion and breakthrough idea! I think one of the most important things you can do in life is WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!!! mind-blowing, I know. I also think fallowing your fascination is a great way of opening your minds potential, because if your fascinated, you'll have a passion and if your passionate, you'll have drive, and if your driven there is nothing you cant do. Having video production as a major in itself is fallowing my fascination, but within that,  making videos about things that fascinate me will probably lead something really well made.

Defining the Right Challenge. During school, especially high school, I've found that the most students have wrong answers to things, because they dont know what they're being asked. Not knowing the question makes impossible to answer. I recently watched a movie in my english class in which 5 people were trapped in an enclosed space with only water for an unknown amount of time. It was sort of a "saw"  spin off where he was watching them to see how they would react to being trapped without food. Of the five, two decided that eating the others was the only way to survive, when the last woman of the opposing three separates herself from them, they kill one another and she temps the watcher to come down by writing him a message on a piece of metal and 'dying' due to starvation. When he comes down, she kills him and is able to escape. She saw the problem as, how do I get out? not who do I kill to survive? By defining the right challenge and thinking long term she ended up being the only survivor. Defining the right challenge is a huge and vital but many times overlooked step to solving an issue. Defining the issue can be used to trouble-shoot and get things done faster on set and while fixing equipment.

Taking a break. Nap-time. A lost art. I think there would be nothing better for children in elementary through high school than nap-time. Stress is a mind killer! A break can be the most rewarding thing to a strenuously thinking mind. By not thinking about about an issue or problem, you start to think about it and BOOM! answer. A relaxed mind falls to your subconscious which then finds the answer in some place we can't find. Personally, I find that I start having my best ideas as I'm trying to fall asleep, right when I want to stop thinking. I keep a notebook by my bed so I can write down all the ideas I have once I try to fall asleep, so I guess thats my way of implementing taking a break in my own creative life, going to sleep :) .

3. Tolerate Ambiguity
What new idea of yours is bubbling on the brink of breakthrough? In what ways can you stay
with it, even if something in you is impatient for a breakthrough?

I have an idea for a movie, but because it is coming from a real life experience its frustrating to pick and choose what is important and also a larger than life approach to make it interesting. By keeping a journal of ideas I can stay with it in hopes of stumbling upon a better way of going about my story.

Blog Entry 1A: Creative People that Inspire Me

Three Creative people that inspire me as a creative person are Andrew Jenks, Walt Disney and Baz Luhrmann.
Andrew Jenks started out as a kid interested in film making just like any of the students here at OU. He was 19 when one summer he moved into a nursing home and documented his experiences. It got a lot more attention than he thought it would. MTV picked him up and he now has a show called World of Jenks, where he fallows around seemingly normal people and document their lives. He has episodes where he has fallowed around an MMA fighter, an aspiring Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader, a 20-year-old with autism and many others. In the attached episode he fallows around 23-year-old Brogan in the “shockingly dangerous world of animal rescue”.
Freedom's Flight-- Andrew Jenks   http://www.mtv.com/videos/world-of-jenks-ep-5-freedoms-flight/1649260/playlist.jhtml
Jenks inspires me as a creative person because he was a normal kid, goofing with his friends and had a camera, but he decided to do good with his camera. From his show, things that usually go unspoken of like the ARM (Animal Recovery Mission) are put into public eyes and it really shows how complex peoples lives can be. Showing the soft family man, behind an MMA fighter and the tearful hard and surprisingly non-superficial life of a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader. I think his stories used the audiences’ conscious affection toward the subject of that episode in efforts to affect their subconscious the next time they make an assumption of what a certain person is like. I think this truly is reality television.
Walt Disney also inspires me as a creative person. Not only his drive to becoming an infamous name in every household but also his dedication to children and fun. The Walt Disney Classic movies are probably the most pure form of what a classic means. There is not a child in the United States that hasn’t seen a Disney classic movie. The princesses are the centrals of what little girls dress up as and strive to be. Walt Disney is a prime example of active and didactic mechanisms in use.  Snow White for example, she eats an apple from a stranger and she falls into a ‘deep sleep’ and is taken away, a.k.a. you should not eat food from strangers/ let them know your home alone. My love for Disney is one very much based on my childhood but I love the stories and  I love teaching children, especially now a days they need a bit of a sense of direction.
Snow White and the Poison Apple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irTuCedD9Ms&feature=related
Most of all I am inspired by Baz Luhrmann. Known for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Australia, Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge! . I will use Moulin Rouge as my example as it’s my all time favorite movie.  He wrote, directed produced and worked on the soundtrack of this film that I find completely flawless (call it blinded by love if you want). You can see even in the attached trailer for the movie the use of contrast and affinity. You will see mass amounts of red against a darkish grey background. Also the clever use of foreshadowing using the scenes of the play being written is extremely witty for the audience during they’re second or third time watching. Also the chose to use songs already popular was great because, I know personally, I enjoy musicals far more when I know the songs, making it so I enjoy them my third of fourth viewing, where as this movie it excites the audience in that they too know these lyrics and can relate.
